HIGH ORANGE PRICES IN EUROPE DID NOT TRANSLATE TO HIGH PROFITS FOR SOUTH AFRICAN PRODUCERS

Pico Agriviet

South African oranges obtained high prices in European markets during 2022, far above any expectation prior to the start of the season. However, according to South African exporters, while prices were good, the end results were disappointing. The primary reason is the significant increase in internal costs at the European level including transport from the port to the warehouse, THC, handling, and above all the cost of cooling, which went from 300 euros to almost 700 euros per container compared to the previous season. This translated into low prices and profits back to South African producers and exporters, so much so that many are investigating alternative destinations for the 2023 season.
