Onion shipments fell 11% in volume and 9% in value compared to the previous year.

From January to the end of August, Peruvian onion exports reached 123,312 tons for US$42 million. Compared to the same period in 2021, it was 11% lower in volume and 9% lower in value. The average price in the international market increased 3%, leaving it at US$ 0.34 per kilogram. All this would be related to a decrease in onion production, since according to a survey carried out by the Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation, for the 2021/2022 campaign, 673 hectares were worked less than what was available during the last five campaigns. The cause of this decrease would be the substitution by other more profitable crops. On the other hand, the main places where this product was sent were the United States, Colombia and Spain, which together had a 94% share.

Shipments to the United States did not have a greater variation in terms of volume. However, the value increased 6% compared to what was registered the previous year. With this, exports totaled 64,066 tons for US$ 27 million. Regarding the price, it increased 6%, reaching US$ 0.43 per kilogram.

For its part, Colombia acquired 35,453 tons for US$ 8 million. This was 30% more in volume and 37% more in value compared to 2021. The price at which the Peruvian onion was quoted in the Colombian market amounted to US$0.22 per kilogram, 5% higher than the previous year.

And as for the Spanish market, it suffered a fall in both volume and value. This represented a severe blow to Peruvian onion exports, since in 2021 this destination represented 22% of shipments. During the first eight months of 2022, Peru exported 11,222 tons for US$5 million, 45% less in volume and 55% less in value than what was shipped in 2021. In this way, the price was also reduced by 18%. , reaching US$ 0.40 per kilogram.
